Uruguay and Mexico Top Two in World Cup

In the World Cup Football, Uruguay and Mexico have booked their places in the knockout stage of the tournament by finishing as the top two teams in Group A. Hosts South Africa and 2006 Runners up France have been eliminated.

In the third and final league games of Group A today, while Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0 at Rustenburg, South Africa defeated France 2-1 at Bloemfontein.

Uruguay topped the goup with seven points with two wins and a draw. Mexico got the second position with four points with one victory and a draw.

Hosts South Africa who also collected four points, were placed third, on the basis of goal differences with Mexico.

France, the runners up in 2006 World Cup, bowed out of the competition by finishing at the bottom of the table with just one point.

In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, four matches are scheduled for today.

In two Group A encounters, slated to begin at 1930 hours, Mexico will meet Uruguay at Rustenburg, while France face South Africa.

In the other two matches in Group B, slated to begin at Midnight, Nigeria will play against South Korea at Durban, while Greece will take on Argentina at Polokwane.


Spain beat Honduras, Chile defeat Switzerland, Portugal trounces N Korea (21-6-2010)

In World Cup Football, Spain have kept alive their chances of making the Round of Sixteen. In a Group H clash at Ellis Park in Johannesburg last night, they beat Honduras by two goals to nil.

Both the goals came through David Villa in the 17th and 51st minutes. Villa, however, failed to complete a ha-trick when he missed a penalty in the second half. The win has given Spain three points.

In their opening game, the European champions had suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Switzerland.
Chile top the group with 6 points following their 1-0 win over Switzerland in Port Elizabeth on Monday. Switzerland have three points, following their win over Spain.

In the Group G encounter in Cape Town, Portugal recorded their biggest ever victory in the World Cup when they overwhelmed North Korea 7-0. The victory has taken Portugal on the verge of a round 16 berth with four points. North Korea were knocked out after suffering their second defeat in as many matches.
